Prison Numeracy

Erasmus+ Project 2025-2027

Strengthening Numeracy Skills in Prison Education

Enhancing employability and reintegration outcomes for incarcerated adults through improved numeracy education across the Netherlands, Belgium, and Ireland.

Why numeracy matters

Numeracy is more than “doing sums”—it is a critical skill in life and work. It is the ability to interpret a pay slip, manage a household budget, or follow a medical prescription.

  • Between 30% and 50% of incarcerated adults struggle with limited numeracy.
  • This percentage is significantly higher than in the general population, and often higher than literacy challenges.
  • Limited numeracy skills create barriers to employability, daily life management, and successful reintegration into society.

Our Core Activities

Three interconnected strategies to build sustainable educational foundations for numeracy.

Assessment & Motivation

We are developing inclusive assessment toolkits for use in the partner countries to identify numeracy needs early and motivate learners to engage.

Empowering Educators

Providing prison teachers with specialized professional development and a peer-support network tailored to the unique prison environment.

Stakeholder Engagement

Raising awareness and disseminating resources to key stakeholders to ensure that numeracy remains a priority on the European educational agenda.
